The International Media and Nostalgia Network (IMNN) was launched during the 2015 IAMHIST conference (Indiana University). The idea behind the network is to bring scholars and professionals together who research media and nostalgia by approaching it from various disciplines and cultural perspectives. The network’s goal is to exchange thoughts, to inspire and support each other and to cooperate on publications, conferences and projects going from digital to migrant nostalgia. Hence, we do not want to limit the access to the network by defining a certain type of research on media and nostalgia but endorse a broad and inclusive understanding of the topic leading to critical reflections on different types, functions and layers of this very special feeling, experience and practice. IMNN members and founders come from different research backgrounds (sociology, anthropology, communication and media studies, art history, media archaeology, cultural studies, geography, musicology, history, museology, literature, psychology, politics…) and live in various geographical places (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Taiwan, Turkey). The main emphasis of the network is put on the interrelations between nostalgia and media, where media is understood in its broader sense: not only ‘classical’ mass media or media industries, but also other technologies and devices that are conceived as media (literature, music, video games etc.), let alone any cultural platform that mediates meanings, such as art, museums and fashion. Our approach is to (re-)think and tackle critically the relation of nostalgia and media, but also those of memory, history and archives.
The founding members of IMNN – Emmanuelle Fantin (Paris-Sorbonne University, France), Ekaterina Kalinina (Stockholm University, Sweden), Manuel Menke (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Katharina Niemeyer (University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada).
